Good wardrobes always begin with a few good pieces, worn again and again. They’re the pieces that you can depend on to bring an outfit together, to make you feel comfortable or answer those ‘what should I wear today?’ questions. The item categories that circulate ‘style essentials’ lists are often pretty generic, but the items are unique – and perhaps mine can inspire you.

Polka Dot Tights
I started wearing polka dot tights somewhat obsessively late last year, and I still haven’t let them go. I’ve probably spend a couple of hundred dollars buying these as unfortunately they rip easily. I think they add an additional splash of personal style to any outfit, and always make me feel comfortable in whatever skirt I’m wearing.

Quilted Handbags
I have two of these, one in black & gold and one in white & silver. Together they’re able to complement almost any outfit and safely port my phone and other essentials wherever they need to go.

An Oversized Bag
Essential for a University student. I became sick of cramming my books and folders into a bag that would not comfortable hold everything, and bought this bag on impulse. It’s done me well ever since. I love the zips on the side that jazz up what would have otherwise been a bit plain.

Black Skinny Jeans
I like having a good pair of black jeans on hand, to go with anything and to keep my legs warm. I used to buy all my jeans from Lee, but these are from Country Road because I like the fit and quality of their denim.

Wear-Anywhere-Dress
This Stolen Girlfriends Club dress was perhaps one of my best purchases. The back lattice detail makes it slinky enough to wear out, it pairs well with blazers for a formal look and is easily dressed down for day-to-day wear. I was so crazy about this that when I saw another of the same dress selling on Trade Me I snapped it up, just in case something horrendous happened to the first.

Leather Jacket
This jacket knows me pretty well, it’s my default jacket of choice because it checks all the boxes. It’s warm, it’s comfortable, it’s stylish and it goes with pretty much everything.

Kitschy Necklaces
I wear the Karen Walker Girl Robot necklace, and Deadly Ponies claw necklace almost interchangeably.
What are your style essentials?
This was a really good list. I basically own (or am striving to own) all these pieces. Still working on acquiring more jewelry, though.

I loove polka dot tights (I wear my ripped ones because I can’t get them in Mexico, and last time I ordered online they ripped instantly because the post office stapled something on them u_ú).
My style essentials are: skinny jeans, black hoodie, my puma bag for when I go out, a clutch for formal affairs and a messenger bag for school. I also wear converse sneakers a lot oo and high heeled ankle boots.

Erica – Good quality, meaningful jewelery is hard to come by. You can buy a huge quantity pretty easily, but it’s harder to find something you have a burning desire to wear all the time… Spending a lot of money on the piece tends to resolve that though, haha!
Julie – They rip SO easily, I’ve been through so many pairs. I usually have some on hand. It’s terribly wasteful. Must find ways of making them more durable.

I love these! Definitely an oversized bag (I just can’t do ‘little’ or ‘clutch’; I have stuff EVERYWHERE), opaque tights, dresses (you will see pigs fly more often then you will catch me in pants), my faux leather jacket and a good pair of boots – again, you will probably see pigs fly more often then you will catch me in a pair of heels, as well! I’m tall and like to walk around a lot, so for me, comfort is pivotal. (And nothing will make me feel less enthusiastic about wherever I am than sore, heel-inflicted-pain.)

I love oversized bags as well.
My closet is full of them. I’m not a minimalist at all. I also love skinny jeans in different kinds of washes, but I’m partial to darker washes in all of my jeans. I also love tights and my knee high boots, both with a heel and flat. And I love my pocket watch necklace to go with everything.

FANTASTIC POST. I definitely agree with you – the “essentials” are awesome, especially if you’re in that “oh golly I’m in a huge rush” phase. The go-to outfit is always a winner, as well!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I totally want polka dot tights. I have one ring I wear all the time. I don’t even think about it as a “fashion” item. It’s just there.

I have a black dress, black heels, white heels, wedge heels, sneakers, and black flip flops. I think for jewelry it would be a treble clef pendant on a black nylon cord.

Great style essentials! Love that oversized bags. I agree with the black skinnies and I tend to wear a large statement necklace to give an outfit a bit of oomph.

Great style essentials (that’s a lot of money for tights…). I think it’s pencil skirts, blouses, t-shirts and high heels for me. xoxo
