Looking back through the archives it’s interesting to see how my style has changed in the past few years. It’s become more defined and refined, and I’m far more certain about what I like (and what I don’t like) than I have been in the past. There is a very particular aesthetic & look that I tend to gravitate toward – but I’ve never been able to put it into words.
One of my goals for 2011 is to buy clothes that best fit this particular aesthetic and build a more cohesive wardrobe. In the process I hope to avoid impulse purchases that sit at the back of my wardrobe unworn, and minimize cost-per-wear of the clothes that I do have – and (as an added bonus), feel completely in my element every day of the week.
Following in the foot steps of Gala Darling, I’ve been trying to define and direct my style going forward. This, of course, isn’t set in stone – it’s very likely to change with the seasons. My aim is to frame and encapsulate my personal style in a way that allows me to keep it at the forefront of my mind when shopping and dressing.
After much thought & deliberation, I’ve decided to call ‘my look’:
The First Class Weekender is overdressed for casual occasions. She wears chunky wedges and carefully picked out jewelery out for brunch. Half of her outfit will be body con, loose sweaters and knits over fitted skirts, or corset tops tucked into loose skirts.
It’s dressed up casual, with surprising splashes of heavy metal and glitter.
The palette veers toward black and white, with grey / brown / cream / navy accents mixed with subtle animal prints (mostly leopard) and florals – never too loud.
Silhouettes should survive transitions between university, office and home. Take crisp white button up shirts, undo top button and tuck one half into jeans. Short skirts must be off-set with long sleeves, cardigans, tights or knee high socks. Loose tops over tight pants.
Chunky heels, solid platforms. Shoes are veering toward are peep toed wedges, and Mary Jane ankle straps; with room for the exception of black glitter pumps and studded flats.
Accessories are subtle. Pendant necklaces, silver studs, a couple of rings, simple bracelets – ASOS, Karen Walker and Stolen Girlfriends Club. Slim belts. Carefully chosen bags with elegant (yet interesting) detailing.
New York model off duty and Swedish cool. Feminine and edgy.
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.
On that note – here’s to a classy and fabulous New Year!
