I wanted to weigh in on this weeks Friend Friday questions because I thought they were so relevant to the post I made earlier this week on creating an editorial calendar for your blog.
It is difficult to balance a blog, school, a job, social life and other hobbies & interests – and this weeks questions were around the question of ‘how do you do it all?!’
1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?
Blogging is not my top priority, but it is an important one. My top priorities pertain to university and work, my blog falls somewhere amongst my personal & social life – although I would never blow off play time for my blog…
I can say that blogging is higher on my list of priories than fitness. Hm…
2. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?
I’ve found an editorial calendar to be helpful, in that it allows me to plan ahead of time and then concentrate on just writing the post rather than have to spend extra time generating ideas. When you are in an ‘ideas generating’ frame of mind they often come a lot easier, which is why I find idea generation and planning in advance to work for me.
I’ve tried writing out post outlines in spare moments (on the bus, for example) but I often find that by the time I’m ready to write I go in a different direction. Go figure!
3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?
I feel as if I am beating a dead horse here, but my editorial calendar is my #1 tool. I also carry a notebook for ideas generation with me and write down ideas as I get them.
Saving great images when you find them is also useful, I use Pinterest to collect images and “pin” anything I like the look of (particularly if I think it may come in use for a future post).
4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?
Yes! If you’re interested, you might like to read this post: How to Tame Your Blog With An Editorial Calendar.
5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?
There are a few! I would write in-depth posts in advance, only touching up when it came to post them. I’d tackle the issues that take awhile to research, or that I’m afraid to explore due to the mental energy required.
I’d respond to every comment, and comment back. I’d read and comment on more blogs, get in touch with more bloggers and just engage with the community a lot more than I do now.
I’d also love to guest post. Currently, the time that I do have to write I’d prefer to spend on producing content for my own blog. I hope to change that soon and contribute to places like IFB.
Like many bloggers, I would love to live & breath my blog, but it is a constant balancing effort. I am glad to be reminded that I am not the only blogger who is challenged by balancing multiple commitments and wanting more hours in the day. However, at the end of the day, I think these words of wisdom are something to be reminded of:
