I love this video, I love everything about it. It is captivating and mind boggling in the way that makes you want to watch it ten times over to ensure you haven’t missed anything.
That dosen’t mean I’m completely oblivious to the amount of product placement funneled into the video production. We’re exposed to high fashion, high tech and…heaps of alcohol.
-
- Parrot by Philippe Stark; a $1,600 pair of speakers designed for use with an iPod or iPhone (placed on top of a speaker).
-
- Nermiroff Vodka, a Ukranian brand, featured in the bottle and continuing throughout in drinking glasses.
-
- Triangular Heartbeats by Lady GaGa earphones. These are pretty awesome.
-
- An entire row of HP Envy Beats Limited Edition Laptop and best headphones according to the simple sound guide, by Monster; $2,500!
-
- The Russian Mafia Men use a Nintendo Wii controller to bid on GaGa.
- GaGa wears a pair of white “Safari” sunglasses by Carrera throughout.
For the fashion minded, the video also features:
-
- A Burberry trenchcoat
- The impossibly high Alexander McQueen heels that went viral after appearing on the runway.
Let’s be honest, product placements in high exposure videos are great for brands, and they’re great for artists too because they provide an alternative revenue stream in a world were album sales continue to suffer.
This isn’t the first time GaGa’s done this either, re-watching the video for Love Game (at a glance) saw advertisments for the alcoholic drink Campari (0:45) and Baby G watches (2:52).
Product placement is effective when it’s done well. Products should fit seamlessly and authentically. They should be apart of the story, and their appearece shouldn’t be questionable. GaGa’s video accomplishes this, and it must be working as I can’t help but want a pair of those Heartbeat headphones…
